Cloudflare domain extensions hide the price list#

Cloudflare's TLD docs say the registrar supports over 400 top-level domains and send you to the TLD policies page for the full set. That page is a roll call. .com. .bid. .online. .io. .ai. Registry names. Policy links. Zero dollars.

A customer in Cloudflare's own forum asked the obvious question in July 2023. Where is the table with registration and renewal prices. The thread has over 30,000 views. GeorgeAppiah, a Cloudflare MVP, said the table does not exist.

Registry contracts, in that answer, forbid publishing wholesale. Other registrars can print a menu because they add a markup. Cloudflare passes the floor through, so the number only appears when you search a name in the dashboard. That is a lot of hiding for an honest shop.

The hide is the missing column. Not a surprise fee Cloudflare invented after checkout.

Other desks sell year one#

Cloudflare Registrar will only charge what is paid to the registry. No markup. No surprise fees. The renew docs go further. Auto-renew is on by default, and the domain renews at the list price set by the registry.

NameBeta's Cloudflare table, fetched late August 2026, still had .com at $10.46 to register and $10.46 to renew. Same pair on cfdomainpricing.com the next morning. TLD-List still showed Namecheap selling that same .com at $6.99 with a promo, then $18.68 to keep. Wix $3.95, then $21.35. DreamHost $9.99, then $19.99.

Year one is the flyer in the window. Year two is the lease.

ICANN's FY26 fee note still charges $0.20 per add, renew, or transfer that survives the grace window. NameBeta still printed $10.46 both ways. Cloudflare's docs call that the registry and ICANN list price, not a first-year sale.

Finding a free name is a different job. The Gemini hunt gets you a string the registry will sell. This post is the keep.

Cheap Cloudflare domain extensions still renew#

The cheapest Cloudflare domain extensions on those tables sit around $4.18. .bid is the poster. TLD-List had Cloudflare at $4.18 to register and $5.18 to renew. A dollar hike. You can live with a dollar.

Then the words that feel cheap. .online at Cloudflare is $27.70 every year. .site is $27.70. .tech is $49.20. .io is $50. .ai is $80. .new is $400.20. NameBeta also lists .security and .inc at $2,000.20. The word on the label is not the bill.

Other desks still bait those same words. TLD-List had Namecheap .online at $1.18 the first year, then $35.18 to $44.18 to keep. GoDaddy $1.17, then $50.17. Spaceship $1.01, then $20.18. Porkbun $1.94, then $26.24. Same TLD. Cloudflare just refuses to play the $1 game, so the $27.70 floor is sitting there in the open if you look.

.cheap at Cloudflare is $28.20. The word is not a coupon.

You'll hit this if you sort the catalog by vibe. A .dev at $12.20 both years is a keep. A .online at $27.70 is a .com that costs almost three times as much and still looks friendlier in a pitch deck. Pick the keep.

At-cost still has a catch#

The steel-man is fair. At-cost is also a door into DNS, CDN, and Workers. Registering through Cloudflare locks the nameservers. You will not point that domain at another DNS provider while it stays on Cloudflare Registrar. Reddit asked this in r/webhosting. The docs already answered it.

The FAQ is blunt about typos. Search the wrong TLD, pay, and that fee is gone.

• Auto-renew is on, first attempt about 30 days before expiry
• Turn it off at least 30 days out or the charge still fires
• Refunds are none, because the money already went to the registry

And the same-price line is the rule, not a law. NameBeta's FAQ said 10 of 395 extensions renew above first year. .org is the one everyone will notice, about $8.50 to register and $11.20 to renew. The GRS cheap set around .bid is $4.18 then $5.18. That is the registry's own first-year versus keep price leaking through. It is not a GoDaddy cliff.

A Cloudflare MVP told that forum thread registrations, renewals, and transfers all cost the same. Most of the table agrees. The handful of gaps are the reason you still read the renew column even at the honest desk.

Stuck nameservers is a real cost. Hosting can still live on Hetzner or DigitalOcean. You change A and CNAME records. You do not change the NS set unless you transfer out. If a host demands its own nameservers, Cloudflare Registrar is the wrong drawer.

Pay the renew column#

Search the name. Read both numbers. Then buy. Cloudflare domain extensions only show the dollars in that search, which is annoying and also the whole point. The catalog will not save you. The renew column will.

If the keep is $10.46 and you wanted a .com, stop shopping. If the keep is $50 because the string ends in .io, that is a decision, not a deal. Transfer in if the name already lives on a bait desk. Cloudflare's transfer FAQ says wait at least 45 days after a renewal, or the registry will not add the extra year even though you paid for the transfer.

The position costs this. You skip the $1 flyer. You accept Cloudflare nameservers. You accept that a wrong TLD is non-refundable. You accept that ten extensions still wobble. The bet is still the keep, because year two is when the site is actually running.

Mind changes if Cloudflare publishes the register-and-renew table, or starts first-year promos. Until then, pick the extension for the renewal.
