The Claude student plan is not a checkout option
August 25, 2026
The claude student plan searchers keep hunting never shows up at checkout. Anthropic sells Free, Pro, and Max to individuals, and the Education row is a university-wide plan the school has to buy.
Spotify, Notion, and GitHub trained a whole generation to look for the .edu box next to the card field. Claude did not build that box. Choosing a Claude plan lists four individual rows and then tells you those plans are intended for individual users.
You'll drop $20, then find the IT wiki in October. The order of operations is backwards.
There is no claude student plan at checkout#

Self-serve is a short ladder. Free is $0. Pro is $20 a month, or $200 a year which works out to $17. Max starts at $100. That is the whole individual grid as of late August 2026.
Education sits on the Team and Enterprise side of the same marketing page as a university-wide plan for an institution, including its students, faculty, and staff. The button is Learn more, which dumps into a sales form. Nobody hands you a 40% student toggle.
r/ClaudeAI has been writing Anthropic a product spec since 2025. One April 2026 thread titled Claude needs a Student Plan proposed $15 a month with SheerID, more Sonnet, and Cowork stripped out, because $20 a month is a real hit on a meal-plan budget.
That post is a wishlist. It is evidence of demand, and it is also evidence the SKU still is not there.
Think of a cafeteria that prints STUDENT MEAL PLAN on a banner for the housing office. You walked in with a debit card asking for the student burger. The banner was never a menu item.
What checkout actually sells
| Path | Who pays | How you get in |
|---|---|---|
| Free | You, $0 | Sign up |
| Pro | You, $20 a month or $200 a year | Sign up |
| Max | You, from $100 a month | Sign up |
| Claude for Education | The university | School email and SSO |
| Claude for Teachers | Anthropic, for verified US K-12 educators | Educator verification, closed to students |
Claude Code rides the paid cards. Free chat is real, and it does not expire. If the free cap never bites, paying Pro is theater.
The school buys Claude for Education, you do not#

Use Claude for Education at your university is written for a university-sponsored account. Sign in with your university email. SSO failures go to the campus support channel.
You do not paste a code at billing. The student help article lists an enhanced context window, current models, ProjectsProjectsA Claude Desktop feature giving a persistent workspace its own chat history and knowledge base, so uploaded documents and instructions carry into every chat inside it.See also Artifacts, Quick Entry, more messages per day than individual plans, and priority at peak. The school can still lock features.
The admin article is even blunter. Owners and Primary Owners stand up SSO and JIT or SCIM. Existing Free or Pro logins on a school address may toggle, or they may lose the old login if the school enforces SSO and leaves you out of the app.
That is an IT problem, and it is a nasty one if you already paid. The university Primary Owner manages the Education account and the data in it. The school agreement governs the seat.
A personal Claude account on a university email cannot be migrated into the sponsored org. Export first if the school is about to capture the domain.
Learning mode is the tutor voice, questions that make you do the work. It is a feature on the campus plan, and it is not a coupon either.
Purchasing goes through the Education team. Students are the cargo. The housing office signs.
Some campuses already paid, that is the steel-man#

Plenty of students already sit on Pro-class Claude without a personal card. That fact is true, and it is the only honest objection to the title.
It is still the wrong room. Those students got in because the school signed a contract and wired SSO, which is a campus license, and it never was a self-serve student SKU.
Stanford University IT opened Claude for Education to all faculty, students, postdocs, and staff on 30 June 2026. Standard is free to active SUNet IDs. Access is the school email plus Continue with SSO, plus a ServiceNow catalog item, plus an active campus identity. Nobody at Stanford is typing STUDENT20 into billing.
UIT prices Standard as equivalent to Anthropic's $20 a month Enterprise seat, and Premium as equivalent to the $200 seat. Premium is a PTA charge for people who burn the Standard quota. The student on Standard is riding a campus enterprise contract that happens to land at the same dollar the public Pro card shows.
Stanford also told people a personal account on @stanford.edu is finished. New personal accounts on that domain are blocked. Old ones lose access after 31 December 2026 if the owner does nothing. Thirty-day cooldown if you delete first. That is how hard a campus capture can land.
A student at a school that never signed still sees Free, Pro, and Max. The .edu address is just an email. It does not mint a discount.
Do not crowdsource a partner list off a logo wall. Ask your own IT org whether Claude for Education is a service, the same way you would ask whether the school licensed MATLAB. One named campus is enough to prove the shape.
Claude for Teachers is not a claude student plan#

Two other doors keep eating the same search. Both are real. Neither is a student checkout.
- Teachers is K-12 staff verification, closed to students
- Campus Program is Builder Clubs and Ambassadors, and Spring 2026 applications are closed
- GitHub Student Pack is Copilot and other tools, with no Claude Pro offer on the pack page
Claude for Teachers is for verified US K-12 educators. Free Pro-class features, lesson skills, FERPA-shaped terms. Sign up by 30 June 2027 for a full year. The help article says it outright. Claude for Teachers is not for students. It is an educator-only offering.
A university freshman verifying a high-school staff email is the wrong movie. Don't.
The Claude Campus Program is a different door again. Builder Clubs and Campus Ambassadors, workshops, hackathons, API credits for members, a paid stipend. Spring 2026 is in session and applications have closed. That is a campus-org job, and it is not Pro at half off.
GitHub pack rumors keep selling Claude Pro that the pack page does not list. The official GitHub Student Developer Pack gives GitHub Pro, Copilot Student, JetBrains, Notion, Azure credit, and a pile of other tools. Copilot Student is auto model selection and an AI credit allowance. Anthropic Claude Pro is not on the offer list.
Resellers who pitch pack-for-Claude-Pro are selling a story the pack page does not support.
If the school never bought Education, Free is still a real product. Hit the cap, then pay retail Pro. Annual is $200 up front, which is the only self-serve haircut Anthropic prints.
A paid seat is still a paid seat. Cloud routines spend the same weekly bar a laptop session spends.
The check is three steps. None of them are clever.
- Search the campus IT catalog for Claude for Education, or any Anthropic service listing
- Try the school email with Continue with SSO before you touch billing
- If SSO fails, ask IT. If the school never licensed it, stay on Free until the cap actually hurts, then pay retail Pro
Hold this take until Anthropic puts a student row on the plan chooser. A live SheerID flow, a .edu coupon field, or a student price on Choosing a Claude plan would kill it. Until that page changes, the claude student plan lives in a campus contract, and it does not live in checkout.
Questions people actually asked
Is there a student discount on Claude?
Not as an individual purchase. Choosing a Claude plan lists Free, Pro, Max 5x, and Max 20x for individuals. Claude for Education is a university-sponsored account. Ask campus IT before paying Pro.
asked on reddit.com ↗Will a university email unlock Pro at checkout?
On a personal account, no. Education access is SSO into a university-sponsored org. The student help article says to sign in with your university email, and SSO problems go to university support, not a coupon box.
asked on reddit.com ↗Does the GitHub Student Pack include Claude Pro?
The official GitHub Student Developer Pack lists GitHub Pro, Copilot Student, JetBrains, Notion, and a pile of other tools. It does not list Claude Pro. Copilot Student is a different product with auto model selection. Treat pack-for-Claude-Pro resellers as a rumor.
asked on reddit.com ↗Is the free plan a trial that expires?
No. Free is $0 and listed as free for everyone on the individual cards. Limits are tighter than Pro, and Claude Code sits on paid plans. Stay on Free until campus IT says the school never bought Education, then pay retail if the limit actually bites.
