Monday is a Codex login cutoff not a model death

The Codex GPT-5.4 cutoff on August 31 is a ChatGPT-sign-in prune. The API card stays live.
July 31's Codex changelog named the surface. GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 mini will no longer be available in Codex for users signed in with ChatGPT. They remain on the OpenAI API and on Codex sessions authenticated with an API key.
DevRel skipped "in Codex" in line one. One Japanese recap on X filled the hole by sending 5.4 to the ChatGPT app and web.
If you live in ChatGPT-sign-in Codex with gpt-5.4 pinned, Monday is real. You'll rewrite the pin or you'll bounce. If you already run API-key Codex, the live price card is the receipt.
The tweet reads like a funeral#
OpenAI Developers posted the cutoff on July 31. First line, no Codex. GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 mini will no longer be available for users signed in with ChatGPT starting August 31.
Second line walked it back into the actual product. The models remain on the API and on Codex sessions authenticated with an API key. The changelog title still said retire from Codex on August 31, which is accurate and still sounds like a eulogy.
What's new used the same funeral heading, "Prepare for the GPT-5.4 model retirement," then scoped the body to ChatGPT-sign-in Codex. That heading is the eulogy. The body is the login prune.
Someone in the thread was still poking the picker on August 9. "Gpt 5.4 still there."
Of course it was. The date on the notice is Monday, August 31. A month of warning, then the ChatGPT-sign-in fleet loses the slot.
The changelog only kills one login#
Two doors. ChatGPT sign-in for subscription access. An API key for usage-based access. Codex authentication docs are blunt about that split. Desktop, CLI, and the IDE speak both. Cloud only speaks ChatGPT.
Monday closes the ChatGPT-sign-in door on gpt-5.4 and gpt-5.4-mini. The deprecated Codex models section repeats the spare clause. The OpenAI API and Codex authenticated with your own API key aren't affected.
That spare clause is load-bearing because the API catalog still sells the model. The GPT-5.4 model card lists snapshot gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 at $2.50 input and $15 output per million tokens. Chat Completions and Responses still say supported.
Mini is the same story at $0.75 and $4.50. OpenAI's deprecations catalog has shutdown rows through next January. Neither gpt-5.4 nor gpt-5.4-mini is on it.
A dead model does not keep a price card. A login prune does.
Cloud is the ugly sibling. It already required ChatGPT sign-in, and the 5.4 card already marked Codex cloud false. Hosted review auto-picks Sol.
If your 5.4 life was a cloud task, Monday is beside the point. That surface never had it.
The overflow they already taught#
This is the third time they have emptied the ChatGPT-sign-in picker and pointed leftovers at an API key. April 7 hid gpt-5.2-codex, the 5.1 Codex names, gpt-5.1, and gpt-5 from the picker. April 14 removed them from ChatGPT-sign-in Codex.
The kept list after that cut was gpt-5.4, gpt-5.4-mini, gpt-5.3-codex, and gpt-5.2. Pro also kept Spark. The official Codex discussion printed the overflow in one line. Need one of the older models after the deprecation? Use Codex with your own API key.
May 26 retired gpt-5.3-codex and gpt-5.2 as user-selectable models in Codex for users signed in with ChatGPT. API-key workflows aren't affected. The current names they pointed at that day included GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, and GPT-5.4 mini.
5.4 was the model they told the ChatGPT-sign-in fleet to keep. Monday is that name walking through the same overflow door, which is the part that stings if you treated the April kept-list as a promise instead of a parking spot.
Managed configs can force the door. forced_login_method = "chatgpt" means you cannot dodge Monday by flipping a pin. You change the login method, or you take Terra and Luna.
Enterprise access tokens are ChatGPT-workspace identity for headless local work. The retirement copy never names them. Do not treat a token as an API key just because a browser was not involved.
Terra is the fleet stand-in#
ChatGPT-sign-in pins do not map to Sol. Changelog, models page, and the workspace-availability note all print the same pair.

Sol is the flagship and the cloud auto-pick. Terra is the everyday workhorse, the name they give people who used to hand work to GPT-5.5. Luna is the cheap, repeatable lane.
Dollar neighbor on the API card is Terra, not Sol. Terra sits at $2 and $12. GPT-5.4 sits at $2.50 and $15. Sol sits at $4 and $20. Luna is $0.20 and $1.20, which is why mini maps there.
The same week as the cutoff notice, Terra got 20 percent cheaper and Luna got 80 percent cheaper. That cut is a different lever from the Sol sticker that left Plus limits alone. Do not budget Monday as a quota gift. It is a picker prune with cheaper names on the remaining ChatGPT-sign-in shelf.
Fast mode still lists GPT-5.4 as a supported model. 1.5x speed, 2x Standard credits on 5.4, 2.5x on the 5.6 family. After Monday, ChatGPT-sign-in Fast-on-5.4 has nowhere to stand. API-key Fast bills API tokens, not ChatGPT credit multipliers.
Rewrite the pins or switch doors#
Stay on ChatGPT sign-in and Monday is a rewrite job. Workspace model availability lists the inventory they want touched before then.

You'll miss a scheduled task. That is the one that fires at 6am with gpt-5.4 still in the template while you are in a standup. Grep the pins this week, not after the bounce.
Want 5.4 next week on purpose? Sign in with an API key. CLI is printenv OPENAI_API_KEY | codex login --with-api-key. That sitting bills API rates, not included ChatGPT credits. CI already wanted that door.
Docs never say which ChatGPT plan keeps 5.4 after Monday. Do not invent Business, Pro, or some quiet workspace exception. The split they printed is sign-in method, not seat SKU.
Anthropic is running its own dated weekly cliff on a different product. Same calendar energy. Different lever. OpenAI's Monday is a login-type prune of the ChatGPT-sign-in Codex fleet.
Hold the title as a check, not a vibe. If the API card is still up on Tuesday, the model did not die. The ChatGPT-sign-in picker just stopped selling that parking spot.

ChatGPT-sign-in usage still bills against the ChatGPT plan. The replacement names on that fleet are Terra and Luna, which already got cheaper in the same week as the notice. API-key Codex bills at API rates. The cutoff moves the picker, not the invoice for people who stay signed in with ChatGPT.
